Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) will reach 3,000 members by next week, says the party.
MRM’s secretary general Abdul Aleem told RaajjeMV that they have been working hard to gain members in the capital city and the atolls.
Aleem said that they can only determine how many new members the party has gained after they receive the membership applications from the atolls.
He also expressed hope that members of Gayoom’s former party Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), who still support him and his cause, will join MRM.
Gayoom was ousted as leader of PPM by his half-brother, Abdulla Yameen, during his presidency and took the party’s leadership position after winning a court case.
The Elections Commission has given permission to start work on forming the party and has given the deadline of May 20 to submit atleast 3000 membership forms.
