Home Ministry to review wages of prison labourers
Minister Imran said this at the annual ‘Inmates Creativity Fair’
Minister Imran also highlighted ongoing efforts to rehabilitate inmates

The government will review wages currently paid to prison labourers, says Home Minister Imran Abdulla.

Minister Imran said at the annual ‘Inmates Creativity Fair’ that prison labourers are currently paid very little, and that this will be ‘changed soon’.

The minister did not specify when the wage structure for inmates who undertake labour will be reviewed, or by how much it may increase wages.

In his address at the fair, Minister Imran also highlighted ongoing efforts to rehabilitate inmates into being ‘productive and disciplined members of society’.

The government also aims to increase the number of such events, and to better the conditions at local prisons.

Minister Imran has been overseeing an audit of detention facilities in the Maldives, the results of which show a general lack of trained staff and essential provisions.
