The Waste Management Corporation’s (WAMCO) market survey has received tremendous support from the public, says WAMCO operations manager Mohamed Shaan.
The survey was carried out primarily for households that currently do not use WAMCO’s services, in order to ascertain the reasons for not using it and alternatives they use.
Shaan told RaajjeMV on Wednesday that about 3,000 households do not use WAMCO’s services, although the state-run company has been managing waste management in the ‘Greater Malé Area’ since 2017.
In 2017, WAMCO divided the Maldives into 10 domestic zones in a bid to systemize waste collection, and has been responsible for collecting waste from households in the capital since July of that year.
Private trash collecting and dumping in the Greater Malé Area is prohibited.
The operations manager further said that a number of households do not pay bills to WAMCO, and that 84 percent of households in ‘Zone 10’ have outstanding payments.
The market survey was launched on March 10th.
