Former President and government coalition leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s son Ghassan Maumoon has secured the Guraidhoo seat in Parliament’s 19th tenure.
While his brother and MP for Dhiggaru constituency in the 18th Parliament, Faris Maumoon lost the seat for north-Mahchangoalhi constituency, to opponent Mohamed Rasheed, Ghassan had led the votes for Guraidhoo seat during the election held on Saturday.
Preliminary results show that Ghassan took the lead with 417 votes while ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Mohamed Naseer followed behind with 287 votes. Current MP for the constituency, Hussain Manik garnered 217 votes.
Following his defeat, Faris had taken to twitter congratulating his opponent on the win a few hours after the results were announced.
