The return of former President Abdulla Yameen into the political sphere would destroy the hopes of the presidential election, says Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid.
The Minister said this in a tweet on Wednesday, a week after Yameen was released from prison.
In the tweet, Minister Shahid said that the people’s sacrifices in the struggle against tyranny would have been in vain if Yameen were allowed to return to politics, and that the coming generations will not forgive anyone who were instrumental for his return.
Return of Yameen will destroy the hopes of the Presidential election; the immense sacrifices of many in the struggle against tyranny would have been in vain. Incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has also condemned Yameen and claimed that he is plotting the downfall of the government and return the nation to his oppressive regime.
Qasim Ibrahim, one of the leaders of the government coalition, has announced his support for pro-Yameen parliamentary candidates. Regarding this, former president Mohamed Nasheed, the leader of the main ruling party, said that Yameen is manipulating Qasim through lies and deceit.
Yameen was jailed on February 18 for attempting to bribe and intimidate witnesses in the money laundering case against him but the High Court ordered his release on March 28.
High Court has also nullified the order to freeze Yameen’s bank accounts, which authorities claim contains embezzled money.
