The government’s housing project will focus on easing challenges to low-income earners, says incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
President Solih said at a rally on Tuesday night that the much-anticipated housing programme will go as far as to provide free shelter until housing can be afforded.
Solih said that both natives and residents of the capital city are forced to spend ‘the entirety’ of their income on renting living spaces, and that this situation ‘is unacceptable’.
President Solih declared a new housing project for the capital city, in late March; on 22nd March, President Solih said that the housing project will be launched ‘within two weeks’.
Speaking at the event, President Solih said that the project is the first manifestation of his campaign pledge to ensure housing for all Maldivians.
At Tuesday’s rally, President Solih also criticized housing projects run by his predecessor, former president Abdulla Yameen.
Solih said that the Yameen administration had developed flats that are ‘uninhabitable’, adding that while spaces of 500 square foot were to be rented for MVR 8,000, spaces of 950 square feet will be rented for MVR 6,000, under the new programme.
