Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) is indebted to the state by MVR 400 million, revealed Managing Director Adam Azim.
Speaking at the campaign launching event for MDP's Felidhoo candidate Mohamed Mabrouq Azeez, MWSC’s MD Azim said that the amount is enough to plant water and sewerage systems across the entirety of Vaavu atoll.
“The company has a pending payment of MVR 400 million to the state. That amount is enough to lay out water and sewerage systems in this atoll. That is not a little amount” said Azim, according to whom MWSC can only pay up the debt to the state once the company generates sufficient income.
Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, the candidate vying for Felidhoo constituency through opposition Progressive Party of the Maldives was the former Managing Director of MWSC.
At the campaign rally, Azim said that owners and seniors of state institutions and companies must come clean with what had happened at state institutions during the previous administration of President Abdulla Yameen.
He also revealed that there are several companies that have MWSC's payments pending since the past five years, amounting to MVR 200 million.
He accused these companies of having purchased items that come with a price tag of MVR six million, for as much as MVR 15 million.
Azim said that those who make pledges to their constituents after having being negligent in their companies are not trustworthy.
