UK welcomes Maldives’ reengagement with international community
The UK encouraged the new Maldives government to seek support from the UN to build a democratic, tolerant society

The United Kingdom has welcomed Maldives’ reengagement with the international community.

The UK praised the Maldives in its statement at the United Nations Human Rights Council session in Geneva.

In the statement, the UK stated that it welcomed “the Maldives’ constructive reengagement with the international community and steps taken since elections to strengthen democracy, governance and rule of law.”

The UK encouraged the new Maldives government to seek support from the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and UN human rights mechanisms to build a democratic, tolerant society.

Since the inauguration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih last November, Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has been meeting with delegations and senior officials of more than 50 nations to improve Maldives’ standing in the international community.

Delegations of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the European Union have recently visited Maldives and met with government officials.

President Solih has also sent a letter requesting to rejoin the Commonwealth of Nations.
