Maldives President sends condolences to countries hit by Cyclone Idai
It killed more than 200 people and damaged several buildings and roads in its wake

Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has sent condolences to the Presidents of Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Mozambique following the devastation in the wake of Cyclone Idai.

Praising the tenacity and resilience of the people of all three countries after being impacted by the terrible calamity, President Solih expressed “deep sympathy” towards the people who were affected, and to the families of the deceased, on behalf of the government and people of Maldives.

In addition to the Maldives President, the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid had also extended condolences to his counterparts in all three countries.

FM Shahid’s commiserations were extended to Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Mozambique José Condungua Antonio Pacheco, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Zimbabwe Lieutenant General (RTD) Dr. Sibusiso Busi Moyo and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Malawi Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano M.P.

Saddened by the loss of lives and devastation caused, FM Shahid reiterated President Solih’s sentiments to those affected in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi, conveying his thoughts and prayers, during this tragic calamity.

FM Shahid further wished for swift and successful rescue and recovery operations to be carried out.

The three countries were heavily impacted by the devastation that followed the dreadful Cyclone Idai that took the lives of over 200 individuals.

Cyclone Idai had swept over all three countries causing destruction to the critical infrastructure of all three countries and displacing many of their citizens and leaving many homeless.

Al Jazeera reports that rescue teams are still struggling to reach victims, with aid groups saying that many survivors are trapped in remote areas. Bodies are still being discovered in Mozambique and hundreds are still missing in Zimbabwe, Al Jazeera reports.
