Hisaan Hussain, prominent attorney and the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s candidate for Thulhaadhoo constituency, has refuted the accusations her opponents have made against her.
In a press release on Wednesday, Hisaan’s campaign team stated that Maldives Reform Movement (MRM)’s Thulhaadhoo candidate Ibrahim Afeef’s campaign team had sent a letter to the President’s Office accusing Hisaan of abusing children.
The letter states that, years earlier, a police complaint was filed over Hisaan allegedly abusing students living at her house by cutting off power and water supply. However, Hisaan’s campaign team has denied there being any such police complaint and accused Afeef’s team of defaming her as part of their campaign.

In a tweet on Wednesday, former president and MDP leader Mohamed Nasheed condemned the letter and said that Hisaan has his full support.
Hisaan is Nasheed’s attorney and had defended him in his trial over terrorism charges during the previous administration.

At an MDP press conference on Wednesday, deputy secretary general Afshan Latheef said that the party has received the complaint but that Hisaan has already released a statement denying there being a police complaint and calling on the police to investigate the incident and the people defaming her.
MDP has recently withdrawn support for its candidate for North Thinadhoo constituency Abdul Mughni after he was accused of assaulting his then wife 10 years ago. Afshan has said that the decision was a political decision made by the party leadership.
