Maldives Police Service (MPS) has announced that they have destroyed drugs and alcoholic beverages weighing 35.5 kg, confiscated in relation to several cases.
The items were destroyed in Dhoonidhoo island on Tuesday and all of them were confiscated in six cases this year, one case in 2018 and 68 other cases.
Weighing 35.5 kg, the destroyed items include 389 rubber packets of drugs, 220 pieces of cellophane, 2 film cannisters and 35 pills.
Destroyed were 183 bottles of alcohol, out of which 43 were confiscated in 2018 and 32 this year, 69 cans of beer, three bottles of beer, 936 500-ml bottles suspected to contain alcohol, six five-liter bottles, and 14 20-liter bottles.
While police had in January destroyed eight kilograms of drugs, Acting Police Commissioner Mohamed Hameed had revealed that a total of 130 kg of drugs were seized within the past three years.
So far this year, there has been a vast number of drug smuggling cases recorded.
