Current problems with access to electricity in islands across the country will take three years to resolve, says Ahmed Saeed, managing director to the state-utilities company Fenaka Corporation Limited.

Saeed said this while answering parliamentarians at a sitting of the People’s Majlis committee on independent institutions, adding that the company is addressing each key issue at a time.

Saeed and other senior managers were summoned on Tuesday over claims that company employees have been let let go due to their political views.

The managing director told parliamentarians that there is a substantial reason for each termination, and that 11 employees were let go over acts of misappropriation.

The company recently shut down 14 of their offices, and fired 53 employees, to ‘reduce costs and manage its financial situation’.

The Fenaka Corporation provides electricity to inhabited islands across the Maldives, and has power houses in 186 islands.

In the past four years, the company has been marred with accusations of mismanagement, and has been investigated by the state corruption watchdog over its oil acquisition.

The company’s management has on multiple occasions been accused of coercing employees to support activities organised by former president Yameen’s party.

Management shifted after President Yameen was ousted through the ballot box last year, and in late December, Saeed replaced director Mohamed Lam’aan, also a vocal supporter of the then president.
