All fuel stations in capital city Malé will be closed and their operations transferred to outlets to be set up at the Industrial Village, the area reclaimed along the city’s southern coast.
The Malé City Council says work to clear the three stations in Malé has already begun, with Mayor Shifa saying that they are working to introduce a policy against selling fuel in bottles and portable tanks.
Mayor Shifa says that the government believes having fuel outlets within the city to be safety hazard.
In December of 2017, the state-run Fuel Supply Maldives announced plans to build a mass fuel station at the Industrial Village, although the project is yet to begin.
The company said 20 vehicles will be able to receive service at the same time, and the project was assigned for over MVR 50 million to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company.
Mayor Shifa on Tuesday told RaajjeMV that once the stations are cleared, the space will likely be used to develop public transport in the Greater Malé Area.
