The Malé City Council has begun developing the Raalhuganu area, which was cleared for construction of the bridge connecting capital city Malé to airport island Hulhulé.
Mayor Shifa Mohamed told RaajjeTV that the council has been planning the project, and it will be implemented in a few months.
The Malé mayor further said that Maldivians want more public spaces, and less ‘construction sites’.
Mayor Shifa said that councils had their authority withdrawn by the governments of two former presidents, and that many public gathering spaces in the capital have fallen into disrepair.
Earlier in March, Deputy Mayor Shamaau Shareef announced plans to develop the fishermen’s park in capital city Malé to be able to accommodate cruise tourism.
Shareef said that the council intends the location to be developed with ‘public toilets and other services available’.
