Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested a man, with pouches of drugs hidden inside his rectum.

Police's media officer told RaajjeMV that their officers in Gan island of Laamu atoll had conducted an operation after being tipped off the attempt to smuggle drugs into Gan.

Through the operation, police arrested a 37-year-old Maldivian man who traveled to the island via boat on Thursday.

Police had raided the boat after it docked at the Gan harbor, taken the man into police custody, where they conducted a search on him which led to suspicions that he was hiding pouches containing drugs, inside his body.

Upon conducting an X-ray at the hospital, four rubber packets suspected to contain narcotics were found in his rectal cavity.

Gan Magistrate Court has since remanded the man by 15 days and the case is being investigated by officers stationed in the island.

A second arrest was made from Fuvahmulah City on the 13th of March.

Police arrested a 48-year-old man from the streets of Fuvahmulah city after being tipped off and they had found 30 pieces of cellophane suspected to contain narcotic substances, on him.

The man has since been remanded by three days upon being presented to the Fuvahmulah Magistrate Court.

The police station in the city has taken on investigations into the case.

Earlier this week, police had raided an oil tanker and arrested four men in possession of drugs. This Tuesday, police arrested a 21-year-old man with drugs in Holhudhoo. Another drug bust saw the arrest of 21 individuals in capital city Malé.
