The parliament is not giving its support to the government’s fight against corruption, says Addu-Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam.
The main ruling party’s lawmaker said this during the debate on an amendment bill on the penal code.
MP Rozaina said that the parliament has failed to contribute in a meaningful way to the government’s efforts to end corruption.
She said that the last five years have seen corruption being taken to whole new levels and that those involved in theft and embezzlement had pridefully boasted of their actions at the sittings and displayed what they bought from the stolen cash on social media.
Regarding the bill to empower the presidential inquiry commissions, MP Rozaina said that it was returned to the committee for review based on a letter sent by some of the committee members, claiming that changes were made to the bill after they approved and forwarded it.
She denied this claim and said that it was unlawful to return the bill to the committee based on the letter.
