Opposition People’s National Congress (PNC) has stated that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is no longer taking their calls.
At a press conference on Sunday, PNC leader Abdul Raheem Abdulla said that there has been no progress in their efforts to release former President Abdulla Yameen.
Highlighting that it has been 14 days since Yameen was detained, Abdul Raheem said that President Solih had promised to look into the issue during his earlier meeting with the opposition but that he has since stopped taking their calls.
Abdul Raheem said that there has also been no progress regarding their case at the Human Rights Commission and he criticized Transparency Maldives for ignoring Yameen’s detention. He said that they have also been raising the issue with the international community.
PNC deputy leader Mohamed Saeed said that while Yameen has been in prison for half a month, he has still not been questioned.
However, Yameen was not detained for questioning. The court detained him for the remainder of his trial on the request of the Prosecutor General’s office for attempting to bribe witnesses to give false testimonies.
Abdul Raheem said that his detention was unlawful and accused the government of oppressing him. He also urged the public to vote for pro-Yameen candidates in the parliamentary election.
Yameen is charged with money-laundering over the MMPRC embezzlement scandal.
