Pro-government MP Mohamed Abdulla, of the Inguraidhoo constituency, has submitted a bill for illicit enrichment to be classified as a criminal offence in the penal code.
MP Mohamed proposes that illicit enrichment be made a ‘Class 2’ felony offense for presidents, vice presidents, parliamentarians, and court judges. Such felonies carry a sentence of five to 10 years.
The proposal classifies illicit enrichment for other public officials to be a Class 3’ felony offence, with a sentence of three to eight years.
MP Mohamed proposed the penal code amendment at Monday’s sitting where parliamentarians also forwarded the Legal Professions Bill for committee review.
Majlis speaker Qasim Ibrahim had not come to a vote on a contentious bill on granting statutory authority to investigate for two presidential commissions.
