Maldives Immigration Office has denied withholding former Legal Affairs Minister Azima Shakoor’s passport.

Immigration Controller Mohamed Ahmed Hussain on Sunday refuted reports circulating that the office had seized Azima’s passport.

At a press conference on Saturday, opposition Progressive Congress had asserted that authorities are targeting the coaltion’s senior members ahead of the Parliamentary Election.

As such, President of People’s National Congress (PNC) Abdul Raheem Abdulla told the press that authorities have withheld Azima’s passport and plan on seizing the passport of other members of the coalition as well.

“We have received reports that PPM Deputy Azima’s passport has been withheld. We are also receiving reports of plans to withhold the passports of other members of our coalition as well” said Raheem.

RaajjeMV understands that Azima is currently out of the country.

Azima has been charged with aiding former President Abdulla Yameen with money-laundering as well as providing a false testimony to authorities.

Her case has since been forwarded to Criminal Court and the court has handed over case documents to the former Legal Affairs Minister, last Thursday.

Authorities hav also questioned Azima last December.

Yameen was charged with money-laundering over illegal financial transactions made during his presidency.

He was ordered to be kept in remand until the conclusion of his trial, by the Criminal Court.
