Not penalizing those implicated in MMPRC corruption will cause irrevocable damages: Aiman
The controversial report released by ACC on Thursday implicates a number of prominent figures, including politicians and businessmen

Not holding those implicated in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption accountable will cause irrevocable damages, says Transparency Maldives (TM)'s Communication Director Aiman Rasheed.

In an interview to RaajjeTV, Rasheed noted that a number of government officials are implicated in the country's biggest corruption scandal, and that they should be held accountable and penalized accordingly.

He added that this should be done for the people, adding that if not done "it gives the wrong message and will cause irrevocable damages."

He noted that the message, that those that take part in such unlawful activities "especially those with political power or immense wealth" tend to be safe from the consequences, is wrong.

Furthermore, Rasheed emphasized that not penalizing those implicated "gives strength" to conduct unlawful activities.

While the controversial report by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC)- implicating a number of prominent figures in the country- was released on Thursday, it has raised a number of questions.

Responding to this, Rasheed said that "there is room to do so," especially over the manner in how the Commission has handled the matter, including hiding the report for nearly three years.

The report was originally compiled in 2017.

Hours after the 776-page report was released, Transparency Maldives called for "immediate action" against those implicated.
