The State Electric Company (STELCO) has announced plans to develop a ‘solar centre’ to harness renewable energy.
STELCO’s managing director Hassan Mugni said that the company intends to pursue the harnessing of renewable energy.
The contract to develop the centre and install panels to be used there is yet to be open for tender.
Currently, all islands in the Maldives are powered by diesel generators, and STELCO itself said in late January that it intends to develop a substation at the Industrial Village area in capital city Malé.
