Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has finished its investigation of Abdulla Rasheed’s death and has filed a case at the Prosecutor General’s office.

51-year-old Rasheed was jailed over his participation in the mass ‘May Day’ protest and died in Maafushi Prison on 10 October 2017, allegedly due to negligence from the correctional service.

A year after his death, HRCM completed its investigation and filed the case at the PG’s office to charge those responsible. HRCM President Aminath Enaz earlier said that they took it upon themselves to start the investigation.

Rasheed’s wife Shehnaz Abdul Raheem cited doctors as saying that Rasheed died due to an infection that had spread internally, causing lung and kidney failure.

His family said that the correctional service failed to provide adequate care and medical treatment for days after he became ill.

The correctional service has yet to give a statement over the issue.
