Newly formed People’s National Congress (PNC) has agreed to form a coalition called ‘Progressive Congress’ with Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

On Friday night, former president and PPM leader Abdulla Yameen signed the agreement on behalf of his party and PNC’s acting leader and Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla signed on behalf of his party.

After signing the agreement, the coalition gave its tickets to 10 candidates to contest April’s parliamentary election.

They are:

  • PNC vice president and former economic minister Mohamed Saeed for Maavah
  • PPM secretary general Abdul Matheen Mohamed for Ungoofaaru
  • PNC vice president and former defence minister Adam Shareef Umar for Maduvarri
  • Former journalist Heena Waleed for Dhiggaru
  • Ahmed Hamdan Nasir for Holhudhoo
  • Idrees Abdulla for Hanimaadhoo
  • Adam Thaufeeq for Kurendhoo
  • Farooq Ahmed for North Kulhudhuffushi
  • Husni Mubarik for Manadhoo
  • Ahmed Riza for Kendhoo

With the PPM candidates, the coalition has now given tickets to contest in 63 constituencies in the parliamentary election without holding a primary.

The coalition has decided to hold a primary election for the rest of the constituencies. They stated that candidates of both parties will be running in one joint primary election.
