Maldives has only done good, but we seek justice: Jian's mother

Jian's untimely death is the result of 'great negligence'

'Rawshan’s tragic death has also affected Maldivian people'

The Maldives has only done good and has been supportive throughout everything and the only hope is for the investigation to conclude successfully, says family of Rawshan Jian, the eight-year-old girl who was fatally injured by a cement bag which fell from an unsupervised construction site in capital city Male’ in December.

Jian’s mother, Dr. Farzana Hussain stated this while speaking to press at Unima Grand on Tuesday afternoon, where she thanked authorities for the “warmth and care” as well as the kindness shown by the President, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Dr. Farzana also shed light on the support shown by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Vice President Faisal Naseem, Mayor of Male’ City Shifa Mohamed, Maldives Police Service, Minister of Health Ameen and all officials and staff at the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, which in the family’s words put in their best efforts to save their little girl.

Dr. Farzana further added that “Maldives has done nothing” and that it has only been good and supportive to the family at the tragic time of her daughter’s death. The grieving mother added that they have acknowledged the fact that nothing can bring her back, and that her death has left them in unbearable pain.

Noting that it has been almost two years since she began working as a doctor in the Maldives, Dr. Farzana stated that her annual leave ends on Wednesday and she will be going back to work. The family also intends to stay in Maldives until the case is resolved, she added.

Stressing that Jian is not the girl people saw in the horrific YouTube video, her mother stated that her untimely death is the result of “great negligence”.

“Maldivian people have been supportive and good to us, the love that has been shown, for that thank you is not enough” said the grieving mother.

Jian passed away on the 17th of December 2018 due to the negligence of W Construction Group under whose management the construction site was left unsupervised on the fateful day.

“Rawshan’s tragic death has also affected Maldivian people, it has shed light on the malpractices in the construction industry, to which many have fallen victim” said Dr. Farzana.

Dr. Farzana concluded by expressing her hope that the investigate will go smoothly and authorities will give their best to serve justice.

The press conference was joined by lawyer Ibrahim Hafiz and Fayyaz Shathir.
