Maldives Labour and Social Democratic Party (MLSDP) has been registered.

On Monday, Elections Commission chief Ahmed Shareef presented the certificate of registration to Abdulla Haseen, a prominent lawyer who played a large role in forming the party.

The Labour Party was given approval to gather 3,000 membership applications last December, and the party held its inaugural assembly on January 11, after which it approved its official color and logo.

At the inaugural assembly, the party appointed 15 members to its temporary steering committee, which has voted to appoint Ahmed Shiham as the party chairperson.

Haseen said the purpose of the party is to uphold the rights of workers, especially the rights of tourist workers, seafarers, pilots.

The Maldives now has eight registered parties. They are the Labour Party, Maldivian Democratic Party, Jumhooree Party, Progressive Party of Maldives, Adhaalath party, Maldives Development Alliance, Maldives Third-way Democrats, and Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party.
