State Electric Company (STELCO) Managing Director Hassan Mughnee has said that power capacity for Male’ has remained unchanged for the past two years, despite increasing demand.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s Fala Surukhee show on Thursday night, Mughnee said that the capital city’s power consumption increases by 10 percent each year.

The demand for more power due to the new buildings have not been met with the increase of capacity, said Mughnee.

Highlighting the frequent power outages in Male’, he said that that they have been working to overhaul STELCO’s largest generator and that even small problems in the minor generators might interrupt their services.

He also said that STELCO will be establishing a new power plant at the industrial village and that once it is built in 2020, the plant will also provide power to Maafannu ward and Villingili.

Also on the show, Senior Engineer Ibrahim Rauf said that the power demand in Hulhumale’ goes up by 35 percent each year and so the island is now being powered by the new 50 Megawatt power station. He added that, in the future, the station can also link to the Male’ network via the bridge and provide power to the capital city.
