Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has decided to intervene in a court case regarding the leadership dispute within Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
Ali Hameed, a member of the party, filed the case at the Civil Court, requesting that PPM’s leadership be returned to its founder, Maumoon.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, PPM’s former secretary general Abdul Aleem said that Maumoon is working to be actively involved in the case and that they are now gathering the necessary documents to be submitted on Tuesday.
A preliminary hearing was held on Monday. However, all the case documents and files were sent to the Supreme Court last October.
During PPM’s administration in the previous government, heated disagreements between Maumoon and then President Abdulla Yameen led to Maumoon being removed from the party.
A case has also been filed at the Supreme Court to contest PPM’s decision to appoint Yameen as the party leader at the PPM congress last September.
Yameen loyalists have been working to register a new party called the People’s National Congress and some senior PPM members have signed onto the party.
