Police on Monday night announced that it is investigating ‘a string of hate speech and threats’ observed on social media.
While it did not reveal any details on the matter, police via twitter said that it has “observed a string of hate speech and threats ensuing from recent conversations on some social media platforms.”
Noting that it has launched an investigation into the matter, police urged “both sides of the conversation to refrain from making derogatory remarks, especially threats to person.”

Individuals continue to use social media platforms to issue threats against those they declare ‘apostates.’
Human rights defender and prominent blogger, Yameen Rasheed was brutally murdered in April 2017, after a number of threats via social media. While he had filed cases at the police, it failed to take any action on the matter. He was stabbed 32 times, as he entered his home in capital Malé City.
