Several prominent supporters of former president Abdulla Yameen have on Monday night signed on with the newly formed People’s National Congress (PNC).
Among them are former Defence Minister Adam Shareef and former Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed.
RaajjeMV understands that more prominent members of the Progressive Party of Maldives will soon leave the party to join the PNC, including current party leader, former president Abdulla Yameen himself.
Fonadhoo constituency MP Abdul Raheem had requested for permission form the party in late December; his initial request was rejected due to him still having been a member of the Progressive Party of Maldives.
The Progressive Party of Maldives’ leadership is in dispute and the PNC has been reported to be Yameen’s offshoot party in case the Supreme Court rules against him.
Raheem has been given three months to garner 3,000 members, which he reportedly did by December 28th, and once they register the party, will be allowed to hold the inaugural assembly.
