Home minister says Yemeni man arrested in Maldives is a serious case
Yasir was arrested in March of 2017

Home minister Imran Abdulla has said that the Yemeni national, arrested in relation to the Saudi King’s visit to Maldives, is a serious case.

Yasir, who is married to a Maldivian, was arrested in March of 2017.

He was working as an Arabic teacher at Ahmadhiyya and Arabiyya schools and was arrested after living in Maldives for over a year. His wife was ill at the time.

At a press conference on Wednesday, minister Imran said that the public has the wrong information on him, and that disclosing the facts at this time might threaten public peace and security.

Commissioner of Prisons Abdulla Munaz said he is currently in the Hulhumale’ prison, on the request of Immigration, while he awaits deportation.

The man has been in jail for almost two years after being arrested without a court order and detained without a hearing.
