President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has assembled a committee to investigate the issues that surfaced in his predecessor Abdulla Yameen’s administration regarding its housing schemes, “Hiyaa”, “Gedhoruveri kurun” as well as the “Gulhifalhu Housing Project”.

The committee comprises of five members:

  3. Nuzha Aleem,
  4. Ahmed Tholal and
  5. Ali Shuhail Mohamed (who is a lawyer at the Attorney General’s Office).

While the committee was assembled on the 19th of December, the Rapid Action Unit of the Policy Office at the President’s Office will be administering the secretariat of the committee which will be mandated with undertaking the review of issues regarding social housing projects.

The committee will be reviewing lists of individuals who had been given flats under the “Hiyaa” and “Gedhoruveri Kurun” schemes as well as ensuring that all applicants were given points fairly.

Identifying those who were behind the misconduct in allocating flats under the schemes as well as recommending follow-up actions to President Solih is also part of the committee’s work.

The five-member committee is also tasked with counseling the President on compensating for damages incurred by individuals who made payments for social housing under the “Gulhifalhu” housing scheme, but were not given flats.

Assembling the committee and investigating the housing issue is a part of President Solih’s first 100-day agenda.
