The Central Park in Male’ City has been opened temporarily.

The city council made the decision on Wednesday after holding a meeting to gather public opinion on developing the park.

Deputy Mayor Shamau Shareef told RaajjeMV that the council wants to develop the park the way the residents want.

He also said that the park resembled a dump when they were given authority of the park and that they have now renovated the area by removing 17 pickups worth of trash and installing lamps. He added that they are going through with a plan to quickly develop and open the park.

During former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration, the government had dumped some parts left out during the development of Sultan Park in Central Park and also left a replica of historic boat Kalhu Oh Fummi in the park after it was used in the Independence Day celebrations.

While the previous government had promised to re-open the park, it had mainly been left as a dumping ground.
