President Solih, cabinet ministers, and several government officials are holding are ceremony to mark 26th December as a national day of unity

Despite the terrible destruction caused by the 2004 tsunami which swept through much of the Inidan Ocean, Maldivians will always be proud of the national unity they showed that day, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said.

Solih said this in in a tweet, which translates to ‘Maldivians will always be proud of the unity we showed during despite the horrific and disastrous tsunami in 2004, and I beseech almighty Allah (SWT) to always make us one and to grant comfort to those who lost their lives that fateful day’.

President Solih, cabinet ministers, and several government officials are holding are ceremony to mark 26th December as a national day of unity. The ceremony is ongoing in Dhuvaafaru island of Raa atoll, to which residents of Kandholhudhoo island were relocated after the island was destroyed.

A total of 82 deaths were recorded in the 2004 disaster, and 40 were reported missing. 15,000 people were displayed and a total of 13 islands were evacuated.
