Government coalition partner, the Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) is interviewing candidates to contest for the upcoming parliamentary elections through it, deputy leader Aminath Nadira has said.
Nadira said this during an interview with RaajjeTV on Tuesday night, and that they have been receiving requests to contest for the elections through the ‘movement’.
In Tuesday’s event, Nadira revealed that 32 individuals have thus far been interviewed, and that they have expressed interest in contesting for a total of 17 constituencies.
Nadira also revealed that there is an ongoing agreement with other members of the government coalition and that this is why that campaign for the elections have not been made public.
The MRM deputy leader further said that contesting for constituencies where another of the coalition members could have acquired a majority would be to hurt both the coalition and constituents.
Nadira explained that this would divide up votes which would otherwise go to a single candidate fielded together by the coalition.
