Elections Commission (EC) has approved the formation of People’s Action Party.

EC approved the party after its name was changed from Maldivian’s Action Party.

EC rejected the party last week and commented that “Maldivian’s Action Party” was an inappropriate name.

On Tuesday, the EC approved the formation of the new party after the founders changed the name to “People’s Action Party”.

3,000 signatures are needed before EC will accept a request to form a new party.

Maldives currently has six parties. Out of those, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), and Jumhooree Party (JP), Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) have over 10,000 members and are eligible to receive funding from the state.

EC has received five requests to form new political parties, out of which Maldives Third-Way Democrats has already held it's inaugural ceremony.
