Minister of Foreign Affair Abdulla Shahid has on Monday departed from Tokyo, after concluding his state visit to Japan.

During the five-day visit, Minister Shahid was accompanied by Minister of Finance and Treasury Ibrahim Ameer and Minister of Economic Development, Fayyaz Ismail. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel, Ambassador of Maldives to Japan, Ibrahim Uwais, and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also accompanied the Ministers during the official meetings.

While in Tokyo, Ministers Ameer and Fayyaz had accompanied Minister Shahid on courtesy calls to several senior officials of the Government of Japan. As such, the Ministers called on Taro Aso, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Japan, Taro Kono, the Foreign Minister of Japan, Yoshiaki Harada, Minister of Environment, His Excellency Hiroshige Seko, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Governor of Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), the President of Japan External Trade Organization and key business corporations in Japan, President Wataru Takeshita and members of Japan-Maldives Parliamentarians Friendship League as well as President Akahoshi and Vice President Noguchi of the Japanese External Trade Organization.

While this is the fourth time the Foreign Ministers from Japan and Maldives have met over the past 12 months, discussions were held on ways of further strengthening the “historic, close and friendly ties” that have always existed between both countries.

The Ministers further discussed on exploring ways to further enhance the brotherly relations between Maldives and Japan.

A statement released via the Foreign Ministry’s official website on Monday reads that the meetings held with officials of the Government of Japan “advanced the key priority issues” in the Japan-Maldives relations, in support of “mutual efforts to further invigorate” the deep-rooted ties.

The statement further reads that the delegation from Maldives also joined in a press conference at the Japan Press Club, towards the conclusion of the visit.

The visit to Japan follows a one-day high-level visit from Mr Kentaro Sonoura, Special Adviser to the Prime Minister of Japan to the Maldives in early December. The delegation comprised of fifteen senior officials from various ministries of Japan.

The visit marks the first official visit by the administration to East Asia, and Minister Shahid’s third state visit since assuming office in November, his previous visits being to India and the United Arab Emirates.
