Cases of self-professed involvement in corruption or illicit enrichment should not be taken lightly or looked over, religious scholar Dr. Mohamed Iyaz has said.

Iyaz said this in a tweet on Friday, adding that such matters should be addressed fairly without preferential treatment.

Iyaz’s comment comes after the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) revealed this week that MP Mohamed Ismail had not been involved in corruption.

The Hoarafushi constituency representative had told the ACC that claims his involvement in the embezzlement through a state-run corporation were only made to spread awareness and are untrue.

ACC had investigated the claims and questioned MP Ismail, who told them that he was not involved and only said so to inform the public and in the ‘spur of the moment’.

The commission had also drawn MP Ismail’s bank details and stated in their report on Monday that there was no evidence linking him to the embezzlement.

MP Ismail said in an interview to a local television station that 60 percent of the funds stolen through the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation was given to members of a particular political party and that he himself had been involved in distributing funds, having carried them ‘in a sack’.
