A brand of porcine gelatin, a gelling agent with several culinary uses, has been found available for purchase in the Maldives.
The product, from Germany-based food supplier GELITA, was found in a local store in capital city Malé on Friday. GELITA describes itself as a leading global supplier of collagen products.
While only collagen products from animals such as goat or chicken are only acceptable for use in the Maldives, which has a uniformly Muslim population, GELITA’s porcine products are currently available at particularly popular supermarkets as well as smaller shops.
One user shared a photograph of the product Twitter, where she said that the product is labelled ‘100 percent porcine’ and complained of it to the store owner, who had promptly removed it from their shelves.
The local Customs Act requires all food products important into the Maldives to be certified halal.
