Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure is to gazette the safety regulations for construction sites within two weeks, says Minister Mohamed Aslam.

Minister Aslam revealed this at a press conference held at the Ministry of Housing on Thursday evening, where he stressed that the safety of citizens and laborers must be prioritized, highlighting that a lot of construction work is currently being carried out in capital city Male’.

The minister further stated that although the Construction Act states that guidelines and regulations must be published by March this year, it has not been done.

Aslam revealed that work is currently underway to gazette said regulations by 25th December and the Ministry will be sending them to the Attorney General’s office by next week.

“We have already sent the regulations to two professional associations assembled for construction work, - Architecture Association and Engineer Association – for review. We will be sending them to the AG office for review once we get their thoughts on the regulations by Sunday afternoon” said Minister.

Aslam stated that they expect to publish the regulations in the gazette after the commencing week concludes.

“We need to prioritize setting 14 regulations currently and we will be able to complete the regulations in full within the next one to two months” said Aslam.

Highlighting that the regulations will be implemented, Aslam went on to say that they will be conducting joint operations with the City Council to monitor if the regulations are being followed.
