The Ministry of Home Affairs has said that it is conducting meetings with ‘stakeholders’ to establish the ‘Environment and Road Safety Police’.

The first of such meetings was held at the ministry’s offices on Monday and state minister Ali Nazeer said that they had discussed the mandate of the policing unit. Establishing this unit is one of the new governments pledges for its first 100 days in office.

Representatives from the Malé City Council, the Transport Authority, Environment Ministry, the Attorney General’s Office, and the Maldives Police Service had participated in the meeting.

The Maldives Police Service on Sunday appointed ‘neighbourhood support’ officers, who are tasked with overseeing matters in their respective services.

Capital city Malé has been divided into four neighbourhoods, Hulhumalé into three, and Vilimalé is one single neighbourhood.
