A lot of undocumented expatriates work in the Maldivian construction sector, said the Maldives Association of Construction Industry (MACI).

Mohamed Ali Janaah, a MACI executive board member, said this while speaking at a press conference on Monday, adding that greater regulation of construction workers may be needed.

Janaah said that all workers in the Maldivian construction sector are not registered with MACI, and that several independent groups and agencies work in the capital and in the outlying islands.

Janaah said that it is important to account for all workers in the construction sector and to ensure that their managers are licensed, even if it means taken action against them.

Further, at the conference Janaah guaranteed that all workers with MACI are licensed and follow to safety code and that they have thus far received no reports to the contrary.
