Businesses and state institutions in Ukulhas island of Alif Alif atoll have entered into an agreement to ban single-use plastic.

Resident clubs, companies, retail businesses, and guest houses have all agreed against its use, the island’s local government council said.

Guest houses operated on the island have also agreed to bare the cost of installing water filtrations systems for their customers.

The agreement was signed on Saturday, and council president Shaukath Ibrahim said that the island intends to be the first in the Maldives to ban single-use plastic.

Ukulhas island is in fact the only one to have enforced such a policy. The council will also be providing glass bottles to replace plastic ones.
