Former President Mohamed Nasheed has left for Katowice of Poland to participate in the 24th summit of the UN Conference of the Parties (COP).
Nasheed spoke to journalists before his departure, through the Velana International Airport, and said that the summit will play an important role in how small island states such as the Maldives can address the impact of climate change.
The former president, whose time in office was marked by efforts to raise international awareness on the impact of climate change on low-lying Maldives, said that COP24 will see talks on transferring to renewable energy sources of energy production.
In this regard, Nasheed said that island states such as the Maldives can easily manage its power demands through such sources of energy and that discussions at the summit will be an important step towards this.
Nasheed’s administration had announced plans to switch to carbon-neutrality by 2020 and had even unveiled a national plan for this in 2009.
COP summits are part of the United Nations Climate Change conferences held in the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
