Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla was reappointed on Sunday after he resigned earlier that day.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih presented Imran with his letter of appointment for the second time, after he handed over his resignation letter on Sunday morning.
Legal experts have questioned Imran’s first appointment as the home minister on November 17, since it was before the Supreme Court overturned his 12-year prison conviction, on November 22.
The President’s spokesperson Ibrahim Hoodh said that Imran resigned on his own accord in response to public disapproval regarding his first appointment but that the President’s Office believes his first appointment was lawful.
According to article 130 of the Constitution, a person is disqualified from being a member of the cabinet if that person has been convicted of a criminal offence and sentenced to a term of more than twelve months, unless a period of three years has elapsed since his release, or pardon for the offence for which he was sentenced.
