President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has visited Dhoonidhoo Prison.
According to the President’s Office, President Solih visited Dhoonidhoo on Sunday and assessed the environment within the prison.
He was accompanied by Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi and Minister of Home Affairs Sheikh Imran Abdulla.
During the visit President Solih inspected the accommodation cells of political detainees and other prisoners. He also inquired about the requirements to improve the situation of the prison, and also held discussions with the two ministers on improving prison conditions.
During the presidential campaign, Solih on a RaajjeTV programme said he himself has seen that Maldivian prisons are ‘unlivable’ after being arrested at a protest.
President Solih has also vowed to audit the prisons within 100 days of his administration.
