Parliament passes motion to free former President Nasheed
The motion proposes to request the Prosecutor General and the Supreme Court to annul Nasheed’s 13-year prison conviction
The motion now also requests authorities to review the cases of other political prisoners who were given similar convictions

The parliament on Monday passed the motion to review former President Mohamed Nasheed’s conviction and free him.

The motion was passed with 57 votes in favor and nine against.

The motion proposes to request the Prosecutor General and the Supreme Court to annul Nasheed’s 13-year prison conviction.

The motion was passed with the amendment made by the committee on independent institutions, to request authorities to also review the cases of other political prisoners who were given similar convictions.

The motion was submitted to parliament with signatures of 49 MPs, including 12 lawmakers from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

Right after the motion was submitted to the parliament, the Supreme Court suspended the sentences of Nasheed and other political prisoners after accepting requests to review their convictions. Since then, Nasheed and the others have either been allowed to return to Maldives after years in self-exile or have been released from prison or house arrest until the apex court completes its review.
