Addu High School has reported that their electricity bill has gone from MVR 80,000 to MVR 7,000 after installing solar panels.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, Principal Ibrahim Nadeem said they have sometimes received only MVR 600 in their electricity bill and that, because of the solar panels, they have saved around MVR 800,000 in their budget this year.
He said that the school is generating more electricity than it needs but that they have not yet established a system to sell the excess electricity to FENAKA, adding that such a system would completely eliminate their electricity cost as well as allow them to fund the solar panel maintenance and school activities.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed took a tour of Addu High School and observed its solar panels during his visit to the southernmost city. He has said that the new administration will establish a system whereby excess energy from solar-powered generators can be sold.
