Elections Commission President Shareef summoned to police station

Shareef was not questioned over PPM's report against EC

The police wanted details regarding the commission’s plan to destroy the ballot papers

Elections Commission (EC) President Ahmed Shareef was summoned to the police station on Tuesday afternoon.

He was summoned after EC held a press conference earlier that day.

Outside the police station, EC’s legal officer Riffath Abdulla said the police wanted details regarding the commission’s plan to destroy the ballot papers used in the presidential election, which the EC disclosed at the press conference.

While Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) earlier filed a police report over alleged unlawful activities in the election, legal officer Riffath said that the police did not question Shareef regarding the report and that the questions were only regarding the press conference.

After failing his bid for re-election, President Abdulla Yameen accused EC of committing electoral fraud and requested the Supreme Court to nullify the election result. However, the court has rejected his request.
