Maldives Police Service (MPS) has decided to review the brutal murder of MP and religious scholar Dr. Afrasheem Ali, blogger Yameen Rasheed and the abduction of journalist Ahmed Rilwan.
The police service confirmed this via twitter on Monday.
Hussain Humaam has been sentenced to death for the murder of Dr. Afrasheem, who was discovered dead at his home at 1:30am on 2 October 2012. Humaam's motive is still not known and claims that he was hired to kill the religious scholar has gone uninvestigated.
Journalist Rilwan's case is at a standstill and the police have yet to declare whether he is dead or alive. Those arrested and prosecuted in the case have been released. Rilwan was last seen outside his apartment building in August 2014.
There has been no progress in Yameen Rasheed's either. Yameen was attacked at his home at around 02:30 a.m on the 23rd of April, by two men while a third waited outside as a lookout. Yameen had over 30 stab wounds on his chest, neck and throat. The attack was caught on CCTV footage.
President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pledged to re-investigate their cases during his campaign.
