Two suspects charged with terrorism, for allegedly planning out to carry suicide attacks in capital Malé City, have been freed.
The two suspects, Is’haaq Ali from Maduvvari island of Raa atoll and Hussain Afeef from Fuvahmulah City, were arrested in September 2017 and the Criminal Court had previously ordered to keep them in detention for the duration of the trial.
However, they were issued conditional releases following an appeal seeking release from custody.
Is’haaq Ali is charged with attempting a terrorist attack while Hussain Afeef is charged with planning a terrorist attack. The charges were raised in November 2017.
If proven guilty, they face a 17 to 20-year jail sentence.
While they have been released, government officials had last year accused them of having links to Islamic State (IS) militants.
Details of their planned attack have not been disclosed.
